Munguia vs Ryder: Super Middleweight Clash

Undefeated, former world champion Jaime Munguia(42-0, 33KOs) will take on John Ryder(32-6, 18KOs) in a 12 round super middleweight bout. The fight will take place on January 27th, at the Footprint Center in Phoenix, Arizona and will be presented live via Matchroom Boxing on DAZN.

Jaime Munguia held the WBO light middleweight title from 2018 until 2019 and successfully defended his title five times after taking it from Sadam Ali. About 2 months later Munguia defended his title against former champion Liam Smith. Munguia then went on to defend his title against Brandon Cook, Dennis Hogan and Patrick Allotey before moving up to middleweight and vacating his WBO light middleweight title. Munguia went on to campaign in the middleweight division, stopping Spike O’Sullivan in his middleweight debut. Munguia then went on to defeat Tureano Johnson, a fight that would be stopped due to a vicious split lip Munguia caused by an uppercut which gave Munguia the WBO inter-continental middleweight title. Following that he defeated Kamil Szremeta, then Gabe Rosado, followed by Jimmy Kelly. Munguia has called out all the top guys at 160 including Jermall Charlo and has made it known he wants another title. Munguia moved up once again to super middleweight to fight former title contender Sergiy Derevyanchenko in what many perceived has a Fight of the Year Candidate to win the WBC silver super middleweight belt. A clear, impressive win for Munguia will put him in talks to fight Canelo for Cinco de Mayo.

John Ryder has shared the ring with the likes of Billy Joe Saunders, Rocky Fielding and Callum Smith. Ryder even went 12 rounds with Mexican Superstar Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. Ryder has notable wins against Bilal Akkawy and Daniel Jacobs. The fighters Ryder has fought gives him more experience than Munguia in fewer fights. Munguia will be looking to do what Canelo couldn’t, by knocking Ryder out. This will be a tough task to do especially since Canelo was unable to get it done. Ryder knows what is at stake and will be looking to stop this rising Mexican star in his tracks.
