Ryan vs Mayer: Women Headline in a WBO Welterweight Championship

WBO Welterweight champion Sandy Ryan (7-1, 3KOs) to defend title against former Super Featherweight champion Mikaela Mayer (19-2, 5KOs) on September 27th at the Madison Square Garden Theater. The card will be presented live via TOP RANK on ESPN with the main event starting at 10:30PM.

Mayer who is 34, will be looking for redemption after facing a split decision defeat against Natasha Jonas (15-2-1, 9KOs) for the IBF title in January. Mayer is a former super featherweight champion, who is moving up to snatch a title in a second weight class. weirdly enough Mayer’s former trainer, Kay Koroma, will be in Ryan’s corner for this bout. British native Sandy Ryan will make her second title defense, with her first defense ending in a draw against Jessica McCaskill (12-4-1, 5KOs) in September 2023.

“After months of negotiations in every direction, I am thrilled that my team has pulled through for me and gotten me this fight,” Mayer stated. “As several dates fell through in the UK, the last thing I expected was for my manager to call with an offer that ticked every box. My team not only secured me another title fight against the opponent I asked for, but I’m coming back to the US with my Top Rank and ESPN family. I loved fighting in the UK over the past two years, but I have genuinely missed fighting in America. I’m ready to take Sandy Ryan’s WBO belt.”

Ryan expressed her enthusiasm about the upcoming fight: “I’m excited to be returning to America and particularly fighting at MSG. It’s the Mecca of boxing and a venue that every champion dreams of competing in. I feel privileged to have been given this opportunity, and I want to thank Matchroom and Top Rank for coming together to make the fight. It’s the perfect moment in my career, and I’m looking forward to successfully defending my world title. I can promise that on a level playing field, nobody is taking this belt from me. Mayer has had an awful lot to say about me and this fight, and I’m sure she will continue to do so, but I’m an athlete and a professional. I will let my boxing do my talking, and I will shine in that ring on September 27. Bring it on.”

Also on the card we have undefeated Puerto Rican sensation Xander Zayas (19-0, 12KOs) facing off against Mexican warrior Damian Sosa (25-2, 12KOs) in a classic and biggest boxing rivalry pitting Mexico vs Puerto Rico, with all the makings to be a sizzling and entertaining fight that will be held at junior Middleweight. Bruce “Shu Shu” Carrington (12-0, 8KOs) is also another hot prospect on the featherweight scene who will battle it out with Sulaiman Segawa (17-4-1, 6KOs). A nice stacked card of action packed fights to see come fight night. Tune in or head down to MSG on September 27th and do not miss out on the action!
