Youtube star Jake Paul (11-1, 7KOs) looks to keep trying to prove he can box as he takes on what may be his toughest challenge to date. Paul has said he wants to become a world champion and what better way to test those waters by facing former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (54-6-1, 34KOs) on June 28th at Honda Center in Anaheim, California. The fight will be co-promoted by MVP (Most Valuable Promotions) and Golden Boy Promotions and will presented live on DAZN PPV. The 10-round bout will be contested at the 200LB weight limit.
Paul said in a statement to ESPN “Five years ago, I stepped into the ring for my pro debut after a single amateur fight, and every fight since has been a step towards becoming world champion. I just defeated the baddest man on the planet, and now I’m going against a former champion who conman Canelo couldn’t finish,” “Chávez Jr. is Mexican, but I, El Gallo De Dorado, have the will and heart of the great Mexican fighters. On Saturday, June 28, live on DAZN pay-per-view, I will knock out Julio and make Chávez Sr. proud in ways Jr. never has. Another massive event from Most Valuable Promotions, with some Oscar De La Hoya seasoning added to the show. Viva La Puerto Rico.” This fight was announced after negotiations between Paul and Canelo’s proposed fight fell through. Paul also attempted to pursue a fight with Gervonta “Tank” Davis but that plan also was shot down with the contoversial majority draw between Tank Davis and Lamont Roach Jr in March which would mostly likely bring on an immediate rematch. Paul turned to the son of Mexican boxing legend and former world champion Chavez Jr. In November 2024 Paul won a unanimous decision against former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson who was at the time 58 years old.
Chavez turned pro with no amateur career and worked his way to a 46-0-1 record but then his career got shaky, with a loss to Sergio Martinez in 2012 he has since went 8-6. Chavez lost a one-sided fight against Canelo back in 2017. Chavez Jr. said “First of all, I will show what I can do now that everything is in the right place in my life – mentally and physically,” Chavez said in a statement. “I feel rejuvenated and 10 years younger. Second, I want to thank MVP for taking the risk of fighting me. Unfortunately for their Problem Child, they’re going to have a big problem this June-one they won’t know how to resolve. Hopefully, when I beat him, people won’t underestimate this win.”
Paul, with his MVP promotion company has had some big financial gains and looks to keep bringing in the money and bettering his boxing career, while attempting to quiet critics. in the co-main event we have the unified cruiserweight champion Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez (47-1, KOs) who will be defending his titles against former unified champion Yuniel Dorticos. It will definitely be a night of entertainment so tune in and don’t miss out on the action!
