Richardson Hitchins will be making the first defense of his IBF junior-lightweight title when he goes up against George Kambosos Jr. at The Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York on Saturday June 14th and will be presented live via DAZN.
New York native Hitchins (19-0, 7KOs) will be defending his title for the first time after snatching it from Kambosos Jr’s fellow countrymen Liam Paro of Australia in what many have seen has a career best performance. Hitchins’ plan is to make short work of Kambosos Jr. then come after the rest of the champions at 140lbs. Hitchin’s told Kabosos Jr. during their “Cards on the Table” episode via Matchroom, “You are my highest payday, and my easiest payday,” Hitchins told Kambosos Jr. “This s—t comes fast and sharp, I’m going to beat the s—t out of you. The fight isn’t going the distance, I promise I’ll stop you. He’s training to land the right hand. To make it a tough and rugged fight, because that’s what you need to do, that’s what you have to do. You can’t outbox me, your dad knows, your team knows; I’m one of the smartest fighters in the sport. You bring the fighters mentality, you are a warrior, and you are tough, and you have experience. But it’s just levels.”
Kambosos Jr. (22-3, 10KOs) is looking to become two-time, two-division champion if he can beat Hitchins. Kambosos Jr. will be returning to the scene (MSG) of the greatest night of his career back in November of 2021 when he shocked the world dethroning Teofimo Lopez to become king at 135lbs. Kambosos Jr’s only losses are at the hands of Devin Haney twice and Vasyl Lomachenko. The experience and resume of Kambosos Jr. is definitely an advantage over Hitchins in this fight. Kambosos Jr. told Hitchins during their “Cards on the Table” episode via Matchroom, “This is not about money, don’t get it twisted, I’ve made a s—load of money,” said Kambosos Jr. “This is about catching that feeling again and I’m coming back to the same place I caught that feeling before. This is about proving to the world who I am, the champion that I am, the champion I have been. I’ve been to this place, I proved myself as an underdog and I’m coming to do it again. If you fought Lopez, Haney twice and Lomachenko when I fought them, they would beat your a—, and I will beat your a— on June 14.”
