Gary Russell Jr. and Mark Magsayo will Headline Tripleheader in AC on January 22

Gary Russel Jr. (31-1, 18KOs) will put his WBA featherweight title against mandatory challenger Mark Magsayo (23-0, 16KOs). The fight will be presented live on Showtime via PBC from Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa in Atlantic City N.J. on Saturday, January 22. The PBC/ Showtime tripleheader will begin at 9PM/ET and will also feature a 12-round rematch of super lightweights Subriel Matias and Petros Ananyan in the co-main event. Featherweights Tugstsogt Nyambayar and Vic Pasillas will also go head to head as the opening bout in a 10 round contest.

Russell has held the WBC title since 2015, taking it from multiple division titlist, Jhonny Gonzalez. Russell has notable wins over current featherweight title holder Kiko Martinez via stoppage in 2019, as well as a unanimous decision over former world champion Joseph “Jojo” Diaz in 2018. Russell also outpointed then unbeaten Tugstsigt Nyambar in February 2020, who was attempting to make his fifth title defense. Russell is a fast handed southpaw who has also shared the ring with Vasiliy Lomachenko.

Filipino Sensation Magsayo beat former champion Julio Ceja in big fashion when he kocked him out in the 10th round, turning the tide in his favor since he was down on the scorecards proving he his perseverance and how he can be dangerous at anytime. On January 22 when he challenges Russell for his title, Magsayo will be in his sixth fight in the US but this will be his first time challenging for a world title. Magsayo has notable decision wins against Shoto Hayashi and Ramiro Robles. Magsayo also has a notable win over former title challenger Chris Avalos via 6th round KO.

Magsayo has the age advantage at 26 and with world class trainer Freddie Roach in his corner he will be looking to take Russell’s belt. Magsayo looks to show he is hungry and focused. Russell is a skilled fighter, with blistering handspeed. Both these fighters know what is on the line and we will see the best versions of each fighter come fight night.
